January has us digging into the tunes of the King of the Slide Guitar, Elmore James. And if he were still alive today, he’d be turning 107 just two days later. A monumental artist who revolutionized guitar playing and influenced a generation of musicians, both blues and rock. Born in 1918, his family were sharecroppers trying to make it in the Mississippi Delta. A radio repairman by day, James tweaked his own guitar amps to make them produce a completely new raw distorted sound. It doesn’t sound suprising to us now, because this sound really caught on in the mid 1960s. Jimi Hendrix credited Elmore James as one of his inspirations and recorded several versions of his song “Bleeding Heart.”
